Revolutionary War. In 1778 he was granted a license to operate an
"Ordinary" or roadhouse where travelers could obtain food, drink and
lodging. In 1789, he sold this business to his brother-in-law, Edward
Moseley, Jr. He and his family then moved to Henry County, Virginia,
where he began a partnership with Peter Perkins operating "Bouldin and
Perkins Iron Works". In 1804 he purchased the interest of Peter
Perkins and renamed it "Thomas Bouldin and Sons Iron Works." Thomas
had acquired approximately 1500 acres of land between Smith River and
Horsepasture, along Grassy Creek, and operated tobacco farms. His
wife Martha was the oldest daughter of Captain Edward Moseley and his
wife Amey Green, and a third cousin of President Thomas Jefferson.
Her mother, Amey Green, was the daughter of William Green and Amey
Clay, the great-aunt of Henry Clay, the noted American statesman from
Ashland Kentucky, who served as Secretary of State under President
John Quincy Adams (1825-1829). Thomas is buried near Grassy Creek in

large land holdings near what is now Decatur, Alabama. His wife,
Mary Graves, was the daughter of William and Mary Graves of Henry
County, Virginia. The progenitor of the Graves family in America was
Captain Thomas Graves, who served as a Representative of the First
Assembly in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. Green first farmed land in
Henry County, Virginia, given to him by his father. The tract
consisted of 310 acres on Grassy Creek. Later his father conveyed
another 134 acres along the waters of Grassy Creek to him. It should
be noted that the Bouldin family cemetery is on that site and contains
the markers of Thomas Bouldin and his son, Thomas Junior. He and his
family left for Alabama about 1818 and began their plantation
immediately. After his first wife, Mary, died he married again, to
Elizabeth Jiggets Driver, a widow with six children. She died in 1829
and he in 1830. Having died intestate, his estate was sold and all
proceeds divided among his children, as ordered by the Probate Court.

BIOGRAPHY: 32. WILLIAM BOULDIN was born in 1612 in VIRGINIA COLONY. He died in 1671 in BALTIMORE, MD. William was married to Ann Jacobs and they had four children, John,
Thomas, William and Mary. Two of his sons, Thomas and William, and
his grandson William Jr., appear to have migrated to Maryland from
Virginia in 1677. Prior to that he moved for a time to Abingdon
Parish, Gloucester County before 1671. He made a will on August 26,
1671 and bequeathed "to Mary Thwate and the two children now living
named William Thwayte and Thomas Thwayte (sic) which were borne in my
house in Abingdon Parish in the County of Gloucester in
Virginia"......his whole estate, both in Virginia and Maryland.
Furthermore, she was to be guardian and see to it that there was
tuition. They were to receive the estates at age seventeen. In view
of this will, the chronology of ages and dates, it is assumed that
Mary Thwate, wife of James Thwate (deceased) was the daughter of
William Bouldin, and the children, namesakes of he and his father,
were his grandchildren. The name Thwate has been spelled many ways,
for example; Thweat, Thwayte, and Thwate.
William apparently chose to migrate up the Chesapeake to escape a
series of things gone wrong in the Colonies. Since early in 1622, the
Indians had become increasingly hostile, and many uprisings had
occurred resulting in much loss of life on both sides. Some days the
Indians would come to the villages to trade and would be very
friendly. After dispersing into the village they would suddenly
attack as if on some signal, and slaughter men, women and children.
Needless to say, village life was disrupted greatly, forcing families
to take refuge inside the fort at night where conditions were already
cramped and of poor hygiene. Most important, though, was the effect
these raids had upon tobacco and crop production. Dependence upon the
"trading company" for the marketing and export of tobacco soon became
less profitable than trading independantly or through "co-ops." Not
long after these conditions arose, the London Company became bankrupt
and a wave of independence swept the land. Settlers began to venture
further into the territory and opportunities for free land were being
made available in Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania. He was married to ANN JACOBS in 1649 in CECIL CO, MD.

BIOGRAPHY: 64. THOMAS BOULDINGE was born about 1584 in BARFORD, WARWICK, ENGLAND. He was christened on 26 Sep 1585 in BARFORD, WARWICK, ENGLAND. Thomas III, the "Immigrant" as described by W. B. Bickley in his
compilation of the Bolding Pedigree, decided to leave England for the
promise of a better life in America. He and his wife Mary embarked
for the new land on the sailing ship"Swan" arriving in America in
August 1610, after a voyage of 144 days. Thomas and Mary moved south
of Jamestown to "Kecoughtan" a village that existed in the same
location that is now known as Newport News, Virginia. They farmed 100
acres each in their own right initially, acquiring more land as they
could from those who could not tolerate the conditions of the new
land. At one point, the number of English inhabitants numbered 3000
between 1607 and 1610, but when Thomas and Mary arrived there were
only 60 in the Colony. Starvation and Indian massacres accounting for
the losses. Most of the adventurers that came to the new land at
first did so because of the lure of finding gold. They were
"gentlemen" and "businessmen" with no ability to survive without large
reserves of food and supplies. When supplies dwindled, they resorted
to stealing fron each other and then, from the Indians, which set off
hostile retaliation. Planters and husbandmen such as Thomas were
brought to this land to cultivate and grow food crops for the
settlers. Among the other 18 passengers on their little ship were
blacksmiths, merchants and soldiers, to sustain a permanent colony.
Mary had a son, William, born between 1612 and 1624. There is no
accurate way of determining his birth date as records do not exist,
however we know Mary was alive in 1619, when she was granted patent to
100 acres of land, and had died before 1624, when the Muster of
Inhabitants was conducted. In the household of Thomas Bouldinge was
his son William and three young men named William Coxe, age 26 who
arrived in the Godspeed in 1610; Richard Evans age 23, and Nicolas
Dale, who both arrived in the Jacob in 1624. It has been speculated
that Thomas and Mary had other children besides William. They are
suggested to be John, Thomas and Ann, however there are no definitive
sources to accurately verify this except for subtle references and
mention of the names found in old records. Since the records of Ships
Passenger Lists never show an immigrant named "Bouldin," in any of the
spelling variations, arriving in America until after 1700, it is safe
to conclude that anyone in the Colonies at this time with the name
"Bouldin" had to descend from Thomas and Mary.

BIOGRAPHY: 65. MARY. THOMAS BOULDINGE and MARY had the following children:

BIOGRAPHY: 32 i. WILLIAM BOULDIN.
ii. JOHN BOULDINGE.
iii. THOMAS BOULDIN was born in 1618 in VIRGINIA COLONY. He died on 22 Sep 1665 in KENT ISLAND, MD.

BIOGRAPHY: 38 i. JOSEPH WOOD COLONEL.

BIOGRAPHY: 78. AUGUSTINE HERMAN was born in 1621 in BOHEMIA, CZECHOSLOVAKIA. He died in 1686 in CECIL CO, MARYLAND. His father was a member of the Council of Prague and a wealthy
merchant, his mother was of a patrician family of Bohemia. He was
well educated, spoke 6 languages, was an artist, surveyor and
mapmaker. His father was outlawed for signing a protestant memorial
to the Emperor of Germany in 1618, resulting in their exile to
Amsterdam. In 1633 he came to America in the employ of the Dutch West
India Company, whereupon he gained wealth and influence as a banker
