rail road engine crew: San Antonio Division, Texas and New Orleans (T&NO) RR, branch of the Southern Pacific SP) RR, lived in Del Rio, Sanderson, San Anonio, and El Paso. Not permitted to quit job in WW II (or was so told) to move to California with 2 brothers-in-law to work in aircraft factories. Was engineer on first desil engine (east-bound) into Del Rio, TX. Was a good 'shade tree mechanic' who learned on old (Ford type) trucks he used to drive from San Antonio to Bracketville, TX, to bring provisions to Army camp, there; roads were very un-improved at the time and he told me that he (paraphraised as I do not remember exact words) had to learn to fix the truck with a screwdrive, a pair of pliers, and bailing wire, or get stuck. He learned some of his skills from his father, James, who was a blacksmith. He never liked to have the radio on, or too much talking, when he drove our family car, as he was always listening to the sounds of the car, and watching the gauges. I remember more than once, he would pull off the road, to check something, and shure enough, the car would be almost out of water, low on oil, or something else that had a very distinctive sound to him (more than once, I climbed through a barbed wire fence, to get to a wind-mill & water tank, to get water to fill the radioator). (writen by AJ Smith-son)
