Notes for Jonathan Barnard:
Posted by Ralph Jenkins on November 03, 1998 at 09:49:11:

Below is information from the Rev. War pension application of Jonathan
Barnard/Barnett of MA, lived
TN/KY, died Claiborne Co, TN. One of his descendants (child or
grandchild) James Barnett, according
to sworn testimony, was "a half-breed Cherokee" who married Margaret
Condry, a "half-breed Creek."
Does anyone have this Barnard/Barnett line who can connect old Jonathan
with James m. Margaret? I'm
particularly interested because one of the groups competing for the
estate of Jackson Barnett, "world's
richest Indian," claimed James and Margaret as the parents of Jackson.
The Margaret Condry of that
claim was the sister of my 3ggf Dennis Condry of Claiborne Co., TN, b. c.
1785, d. 1850 in Hamilton
or Marion Co., TN.

National Archives Microfilm M804 r. 146
Pension application for Revolutionary War service for Jonathan Barnard.

He gave his age in 1818 as 59, saying he had lived about 20 years in the
state of Tennessee. He stated
that he had served in Massachusetts, in the regiment of Col. Witcome or
Witcomb, in the company of
Capt. Grantham, and that he also served in the artillery regiment of Col.
Henry Knox. He was in the
actions that drove the British out of Boston, was at Prospect Hill, Rhode
Island, and also Long Island
(NY), where they fought a battle. He was a prisoner of the British, and
suffered severely, feeling the
effects to this day. This statement was witnessed by Charles McAnally and
Thomas Henderson. In
justifying his application for pension, he gives the following account of
his finances:

he has
5 sows or pigs $18
3 books $ 5
1 razor 0.50
1 pocket knife 0.25
Bills due to him $40
$20
$ 7
$ 5

$95.75

debts due from him

$ 86
$106
$ 60
$ 30
$ 30
----
$737
- 95.75
-------
$641.25 balance against him

On 6 Sept., 1834, in Mercer Co., KY, he applied for transfer of his
pension to Kentucky: "his children
and friends are breaking up and removing off to the west and he thought
he could live better & cheaper
in Kentucky." He remained in Kentucky from March 1834 to September 1834.
He died in Claiborne
Co., TN 16 Oct 1835.

In 1844, Obedience filed claim for pension as a widow under the act of
July 7, 1838. She employed
James K. McAnally to attend to her pension application. She stated that
she and Jonathan were married
in Goochland Co., VA Nov. 1784. [She is 76 in 1844, so would have been 16
at marriage; Jonathan
has apparently left Massachusetts.] Their first child George was born 29
Dec 1785; second child
Elizabeth born 20 Feb 1788; third child John born 14 Oct 1791. A paper
from the clerk of the court of
Goochland Co., VA, in 1846, states that they have found no record of the
marriage of Obedience, also
called Biddy or Bridget Barnett. George Barnard, age 58 in 1844,
testifies that his parents were known
to be married.

Hi Jim
Sorry I haven't been back with you. I asked my Mom if she knew why
Samuel, her grandfather, moved from Tenn to Ky but she didn't know. I'll
try some other people. I have this article, and where I got it ,I forget,
about the 7 brothers.

Let me know if this is anything like you have. This is it,word for word.
" From several sources comes indisputable evidence that seven brothers of
the Barnard Family met at Bristol, Va. at the close of the revolutionary
war, and there separated. each going to a different state, this could not
have been different states at that time, but rather as they exist today.
They came from England to Worcester, Mass. through Pennsylvania and all
met at Bristol, Virginia. Their names
were John, Jonathan, Zadock, Ruben, Samuel, Joseph and either Jacob or
Benjamin.

John Barnard went to Hawkins Co. Tenn. when received a land grant from
North Carolina to land in Tennessee in 1782.

Jonathan Barnard, B. Jan. 1, 1760. Enlisted in Revolutionary War at
Amsbury, Mass. May 1775. Re-enlisted at Cambridge, Mass. in 1776. After
the war, he met with his brothers a
Bristol, Va. then went to Kentucky, He married his wife, Obedience in
Goochland Co. Va. in November 1784. His first three children were born in
Virginia.
1.George W. b Dec. 29, 1785.
2. Elizabeth .b Feb. 20, 1788.
3. John , b Oct. 14, 1791.

Jonathan and family went to Hawkins, Co. Tenn. In 1798 to be near his
brother John, who preceded him there in 1782, and followed his profession
as school teacher until he went blind. He was still in Hawkins, Co. in
1818 and was in Claiborne Co., in 1820. In 1835, Jonathan had his
Revolutionary pension moved off to the west and he could live cheaper in
Kentucky. Jonathan Barnard died Oct. 16, 1835. in Mercer Co. Ky. His
wife, Obedience was still in Claiborne Co,.Tenn. in 1846.

Zadock Barnard went to Virginia where he was on the Tax roll of that
state in 1785. Descendants of this line moved to Sumner Co., Tenn.,
Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma.

Ruben Barnard went to North Carolina, probably the father of Joseph
Barnard, b. June 7, 1803, who came from Barnard-Stand ? 35 miles from
Asheville, N.C., settled and owned the Little Place, Barnardsville, N.C.

Samuel Barnard went to Virginia and did have a brother named Ruben
Barnard.

Joseph Barnard went to Mississippi. He came from Patia Malbarough Road,
London, England and settled close to Natchez,Miss., in 1784. The maiden
name of his wife was Winefred O Brien and their home was and still is
known as "Elisian Fields", about 5 miles north of Natchez.

The seventh brother, either Jacob or Benjamin Barnard went to Georgia. We
do not know which of the above two were of the seven brothers, but Jacob
seems to be the most likely, as he served in the army in Mass. and
Pennsylvania with the others."

I don't know if this is anything you have, or if all of it is correct.

Take care
Barb

Barnard forum

My family has a letter written by S. J. Barnard of Claiborne Co., dated
Sept. 8, 1868, written to his cousin William Barnard of Roane Co.
concerning the estate of William's father, George, who died in 1866. This
George was apparently the oldest son of Jonathan and Obedience Barnard.

George is listed in the 1850 Census at age 63 with wife Lucretia
[Rowe-Grissom/Grisham], Henderson 13, Dickerson 11, and James Johnson 13.
Next door is P. W. Barnard 23, Nancy [Senter] 24, Allice L. 1, John
Lacock 14, Wm. Parker 25.
Next door to them is Pleasant Johnson 40, Mary [Barnard] 40, Geo. W. 16,
Lucretia 14, Matilda 11, John 8, & Martha 6
As George is said to be his uncle, S. J. is probably Sterling, the son of
George's brother, John Barnard (who is also in the 1850 census at age 31)
and Nancy Mason. However, as he states that he will only be in Claiborne
for a few weeks at the time of writing, he presumably had moved elsewhere
in the interim.

In the letter, S. J. discusses a dispute between William and his sister,
Mary (Polly) Pleasant (& her husband) over the settlement of George's
estate. He also mentions the death of P. W. Barnard, the brother of
William and Mary, whose lands had been purchased by Nancy Barnard
(probably his wife).

Another letter, written March 1870, indicates that the dispute had still
not been settled almost 4 years after George's death. Unfortunately, the
letter is missing all but the first page and provides little additional
information - with the notable exception that William's last name has
changed from Barnard to Barnett as it would remain. Perhaps documents
have been preserved from the chancery court, Tazewell, that would provide
additional light on the matter.

Florence,

Glad to hear the info helped. This is what I know about the parents of
Wiley.
His mother was Catherine Barnard born 1805 died 1880. See had 3 husbands.
The
first had the surname Barnard, but he was not a cousin as best I can tell.
There were several Barnard lines in that part of the country and
apparently
Catherine married a Barnard from another line. They had 5 children: Cole,
Hamilton, Wiley (born CA 1825) Caroline and Benjamin. Wiley married
Malissa
Lawson, Caroline married James SIngleton and Benjamin married Malisie
Barnett.
Catherine's second husband was named James Standsberry and they had two
daughters: Polly Ann Standsberry and Louisa E. Standsberry. Polly married
John
Howerton and Louisa married William Ward. Catherine's third hubby was Dan
King. They had one son, Thomas L. King.

Catherine's father was Jonathan Barnard of the Seven Barnard Brothers
line. He
was born in 1760 in London and died in 1835. His wife was Obedience
Barnett
and was probably related to Malisie Barnett in some way (but I haven't
proven
it yet).

I have some printed materials about Jonathan and the other six brothers I
would be happy to send to you if you give me a snail mail address.

I would be happy to hear from other Barnard researchers, so please feel
free
to pass on my address to anyone who shares the same interests.

Cheers!

Hi Florence, yes Catherine is the daughter of Jonathan and Obedience
Barnard. She was born 27 Aug 1805 d 11 Jun 1880 and is buried in
Claiborne Co., Tn in the New Bethel Cemetery. I was told that Catherine
had several children before she married that went by Barnard. According
to information compiled in 1954 by the wife of a Ward descendant, the
children of Catherine Barnard were "Ben, Wiley, Thomas, Hamilton,
Caroline, Polly and Eliza E." One of these was called "Cole" but not
sure which one. Cole had a daughter, Sarah. Catherine married James
Stansberry and had several children and married Daniel King and had a
son, Thomas. Several years ago I corresponded with a desccendant of
Catherine and James Stansberry. I will check her correspondence and let
you know what she said.
I have information on most of the children but don't know anything about
Wiley.
All Barnard descendants in Claiborne Co descend from Jonathan and
Obedience Barnard. There are Barnards in Hawkins Co but say they are
not related to the Claiborne Co Barnards and they do not seem to be but
on back they may be. They seem to be from the 7 brothers but I haven't
researched them enough to be sure.
Grace

Hello Florence,

Yes, my Great Grandmother Alice "Ally" Barnard was married to William
Riley
Mills, my Great Granfather. Her dad's name was Anderson Barnard and his
Dad's name was Johnathan. I do not have Johnathan's wife's name, however,
Anderson was born in 1809 in Tennessee and his wife's name was Nancy
Epperson born in 1812 in Tennessee. I have have a picture of Nancy
Epperson somewhere. Also, I have a Dona Barnard married Noah Mills, the
son of William Riley Mills.

By the way, Ally was born 9-25-1841 in Flat Gap, TN and died May 3, 1919
in
Sneedville, TN.

I have some more info on the Barnard family, but it is not in my computer
as yet.
Hope this helped.
