John Davis 1 was born about 1705 in Hanover, Virginia. He married Susannah Smithson in 1728 in Hanover, Virginia.

Susannah Smithson [Parents] 1 was born in 1709 in , Louisa, Virginia. She married John Davis in 1728 in Hanover, Virginia.

Josiah Massey [Parents] 1 was born about 1755 in , Kent, Maryland. He died in 1789 in , Kent, Maryland. He married Elizabeth Spry about 1780.

Part II: At the Hall of Records in Annapolis, I remember
finding a book (and I should have photoed some of it)
which had listings of undelivered mail returned to
sender in those days. Several letters had been written
and returned undelivered to "James Massey". Didn't say
by whom written but it was James Massey of Kent Co.MD.
So it may well be they tried unsuccessfully to locate
him.
I also examined abstracts of all the Massey wills in
MD that I could find, particularly those on the Eastern
Shore as it is called who were descended from that
branch of Masseys. Some of them lived in neighboring
Queen Anne Co. When you look at the census records of
Pendleton Dist. SC you see some of the same names you
find in those neighboring counties. In those days
people traveled in rather large groups when they
migrated to far away lands. As I mentioned on the
telephone, there was another James Massey (older than
the one in Jeff.Co.) who lived nearby and had lots of
land, none of which went to James Massey of Jeff.Co.
before he left. I visited the three counties that were
carved out of Pendleton Dist. If my recollection serves
me correct, Chauga Cr. would be in present day Oconee Co.
As you probably know, there have been several lakes
built on the upper Savannah R. One of Neoma's cousin
lives on one of them (we visited twice, he lives on the
GA side further south).
But it all boils down to whether our James Massey's
middle name was Maynard. Peggy Massey, first wife of
Jack Massey of Bessemer, insisted it was. Both she and
Jack were descended from James and Mary. (She died and
he has remarried.) Others have also told me that J. J.
Massey's middle name was Josias or Josiah and that the
middle name of another child was Maynard.
Any actual proof on that would be helpful, of course.
I made a mistake in my book as I have told some. I
always thought Uncle Bob Massey's mother died too as he
lived with his grandparents, Paschal and Betsy Hickman
Shackelford. But after I published my book, my mother's
double first cousin, Bessie Youngblood Locke, set
straight. And the census records set me straight, too.
Thomas Allen Massey's widow married secondly B. F.
Johnson and moved with the others to Union Parish, LA.
One of her sons lived with my great grandfather, Joseph
Henry Shackelford at one census which shows him
as "nephew" of the head of household. Bessie Locke told
me that two of their sons lived with her family in
Marthaville (where I went to school), Seburn and Jeb
Johnson. I knew we had Johnson relatives but I never
knew how they were related at the time.
Gotta run before I lose this! Let me know what you
think. Would you mind giving me Bob's telephone number?
Haven't heard from him on email and he must not be
checking it. I need to ask him some questions.
