Charles Lee Blakely was born in 1842. He died in 1924. He married Martha A McClure.

Charles L. Blakely was in the Civil War -- Confederate Army -- from
1861-1865 and managed to survive the ordeal, although he was wounded
once in the leg. He enlisted as a private when he was 19 in the Army of
Tennessee. He served in Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry Corps., in
both the 4th Cavalry Regiment (Col. James Starnes, Col. W. McLemore),
Company H and the 8th Cavalry Regiment (Col. Baxter Smith), Company H.

Forrest's Cavalry was a famous outfit known for guerilla tactics and
there are numerous books written about the military genius of Gen.
Nathan Bedford Forrest. The battles that Charles Blakely took part in
were mostly in Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama with some being in North
Carolina, Georgia and Virginia. When I was young, my grandmother gave me
his Forrest Cavalry Corp medal that was issued after the war.

I remember Dad speaking of his roots being in Norman , Cleveland Co. Oklahoma. As an added item of
curiosity, I remember him talking often of his singing with Jimmy Wakely in that gentleman's early years as an entertainer. Dad did enjoy singing while playing the guitar, and I have many memories of hearing him sing "Blue Shadows on the Trail" It must have been one of his very favorites.

He spoke of having his Electrician's Journyman license by the time he was 16.

For as long as I can remember, and certainly from 1947 until he retired in 1967, he worked for the government at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash.

He was exempted from military duty during WW II due to a bout with polio in his youth, although he never had any physical manifestations of the disease in my lifetime.

His two sons from his first marriage lived with him for two to three years after his marriage to Elsie. They memember Carol, but Carol being only 1 year old at the time, doesn't remember them.

The sons went back to their mother, Maxine after she married again, and nothing was ever mentioned again of their existance in my hearing, until after Elsie's death in 1984.
Then, with Dad's permission, I began my attempts to trace them and found one son, Otis, living within 160 miles of us! What a shock! Fred was living in Illinois, at the time (1984) and still was in 1997 at this writing.

Elsie Louise Honodel was born 1 on 28 Aug 1921 in Bremerton, Kitsap, Washington. She died 2 on 14 Mar 1984 in Sequim, Callam, Washington. She married 3 Shannon Smith Hughes II on 17 Dec 1942 in Seattle, King, Washington.

They had the following children:

  F i Carol Louise Hughes
