"Messrs. P. L. Smithson and J. L. Gee, of Williamson

It was on Tuesday after the fighting of Sunday and Monday.
They had
been sent early on detail for some guns, and while in
execution of the

command they
belonged to, and on being told, he said, "Soldiers, you seem

expect have
not had any breakfast." They promptly responded that they
had not.
"Neither have I," said the General, "but I have two biscuits.

has a birthdate Oct. 16 1850. Her death year is also in question,
1920 or 1922.
Mary indicates that they had been married for 30 years in 1900,
though the
marriage date shows that they had been married 2 or 3 years longer.
Some questions need to be cleared up on the names of their children.
Mary Jane's death record indicates that she married a SMITHSON and
I have
connected Mary Jane to Pascall G. Smithson because of the marriage
record in
Williamson county, but it is also possible that she married
Alexander M.
Smithson who was listed as age 35 and born in TN in the 1880 Census of
Livingston Co., KY with a wife M. Jane who was age 26 and born in
KY. Note the
informant at Mary Jane's death was an Alex Smithson.

Fountain Phillip Smithson was born December 30, 1850 near
Nashville,
Tennessee. No record is available of his parents, other than his
father
disappeared during the Civil War and was never heard from again.
He married Elizabeth T. Comb (no date) in Tennessee. He
decided to come
West from Tennessee. He came first, looking for a location. He
found and
bargained for 160 acres of land, mostly timberland, at $4.00 an
acre,
located six miles northest from Nashville, Arkansas on the Center
Point
road.
He returned to Tennessee for his wife Betty (short for
Elizabeth) and
four children: Charlie, Thomas P., Albert R., and Leona. Betty
and the
children rode a train to Monticello, Arkansas in 1888. They
stayed with
her mother, Mrs. Comb, until fountain could travel by wagon and
team with
their possessions to their new location in Arkansas. There is no
record
as to the length of time he spent in making the trip. He crossed
the
rivers by ferry on the way to Arkansas.
The University of Arkansas Peach Experiment Station, which
closed in
1987, was located on part of the Smithson farm.
Mr. Smithson built his house and then brought his family there
from
Monticello. Eight more children were added to the family. They
had to
struggle to pay for the farm and cleared land as they could. Mr.
Smithson
raised hogs and cattle and did custom pea thrashing by moving a
thrasher
around the community during the fall and winter months, accepting
a toll
of the peas as pay. As the sons grew up, they worked together
with a
blacksmith shop, grocery store, grist mill and any way to try to
make a
living.
Mr. Smithson died at the family home on August 11, 1928.

Evidently the family was back and forth between TN & AR several
times from
the birthplaces of the children. Fountain's age seems to be off a
bit from
census to census unless the number was read incorrectly.
