WILLIAM BURR SMITHSON. (pp 396-397)
William Burr Smithson, who has been actively engaged in law practice at
Pulaski for the past forty-three years, enjoys an enviable reputation as
one of the prominent and successful attorneys of Giles county and has
also been a factor in the public life of the community, having
represented his district in the state senate. His birth occurred at
Lexington, Lauderdale county, Alabama, on the 29th of April, 1857, his parents being John Greene and Ann Vaughn (Ladd) Smithson, the former
a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, and an extensive
agriculturist. Both parents were people of strong character and
intellect. Their family numbered fifteen children, six daughters and
nine sons, all of whom lived to be more than twenty-one years of age and
were perfect both physically and mentally.

William B. Smithson obtained his education in the common schools of
Giles county, Tennessee, and in Giles College of Pulaski, this state. He
spent the period of his minority as a farmer boy, but on reaching man's
estate took up the study of law and in December, 1879, obtained a
license to practice. Through the intervening period to the present time,
covering approximately forty-three years, he has continuously followed
his profession in Pulaski and has built up a most gratifying clientage.
He has always depended solely upon his merits, observing and applying
the Golden Rule in all business transactions, and as a member of the bar
has gained not only material prosperity but also the respect and
confidence of the general public and of the profession as well. His
accumulations consist principally of real estate in Pulaski and Giles
county, Tennessee, including a very handsome residence on Third street
in Pulaski.

On the 21st of November, 1882, at Spring Hill, Maury county, Tennessee,
Mr. Smithson was united in marriage to Miss Sallie Reese McLemore,
daughter of Colonel Robert W. and Harriett Susan (Figuers) McLemore.
Mrs. Smithson, a representative of one of the oldest, wealthiest and
most prominent families of this state, is a woman of great intelligence
and executive ability. She was very beautiful and attractive as a young
lady and is still remarkably well preserved.

Since age conferred upon him the right of franchise Mr. Smithson has
supported the democratic party. From the 1st of January, 1897, to the
1st of January, 1899, he served as state senator of the twenty-second
senatorial district of Tennessee, composed of Giles, Lawrence and Wayne
counties, and made a most creditable record in the general assembly,
giving thoughtful and earnest consideration to all the vital questions
which came up for settlement. Fraternally he is prominent as a Knight of
Pythias. He has held every office in Stonewall Lodge, No. 12, K. P., of
Pulaski, Tennessee, and has filled practically every office in the grand
lodge of the Knights of Pythias of Tennessee, serving as grand
chancellor from May, 1896, until May, 1897. He has been identified with
the Methodist Episcopal church, South, since his early youth and for
many years has held membership on the official boards of the church at
Pulaski. In the community in which practically his entire life has been
spent he is accorded distinction as a foremost attorney and influential
citizen.

Sallie Reese McLemore was born in Jun 1860 in , Tennessee. She died in 1903. She was buried in Maplewood Cemetary, Pulaski, Giles, Tennessee. She married William Burr Smithson on 21 Oct 1882 in Spring Hill, Maury, Tennessee.

Comments:
In the 1850 census there is an Eliza Smithson who is age 35. Who
is this? Is she a stand-in housekeeper for the family? Is she
Sylvanus's sister or sister-in-law?
None of the children from his first marriage are living with them
in 1860.
Where are they? Are some of them deceased? Did they all get married?
Did he apply for pension or fill out Questionnaire? Betsy says no.

Action:
Need to find an accurate death date and burial place. Probably
should look in Lamar Co., TX.

Myra Hadden "Mira" was born about 1818 in , Tennessee. She died on 14 Nov 1854 in , Tennessee. She married Capt Sylvanus Wright Smithson on 27 Nov 1851 in , Maury, Tennessee.

!Notes:
Daughter Myra H. Smithson (raised by Mary Bennett) applied for
membership in
the United Daughters of the Confederacy where she states that she
was born in
Maury Co. TN and was the daughter of S. W. Smithson.

3. Betsy Ragsdale, 500 Baxter Lane, Nashville, TN 37220.

Comments:
Betsy thinks that Myra/Mira may have died in childbirth of
daughter Mira but
the birth of daughter Mira occurred in 1851, not in 1854. There was
a son, S.
H. Smithson, who was born about 1854 according to the 1860 census of
Bedford
Co., TN.

They had the following children:

F i Myra H Smithson was born on 15 Nov 1854 in , Maury, Tennessee. She died on 7 Jan 1929 in , Williamson, Tennessee. She was buried in Mount Hope Cemetary, Franklin, Williamson, Tennessee.

!Notes:
Mira A. was age 9 in 1860 and living with Mary Bennett.
Myra H. Smithson was raised by Mary Bennett and she never married.
Betsy has a copy of Myra H. Smithson's application for membership
in the
United Daughters of the Confederacy, giving her birth as 14 Nov.
1854 in Maury
Co. TN, daughter of S. W. Smithson.
Myra also states that, "My father was wounded at Cheat Mt., VA. I
had a
brother, H. R. Smithson, who was killed at Kennesaw Mt., GA. He
belonged to Co.
E., 48th TN. My father was 62 years old when he enlisted in the
service."
.....
S. W. Smithson was enrolled in Gen. Wall's Regiment. S. W. was
paroled as
unfit for service due to wound received at Cheat Mt., VA.
Betsy says that Mary Bennett left a will in Williamson Co., TN
(Vol. 15, pg.
481-2) made __ Nov. 1869 and proven Nov. Term 1869:
"Item 2nd: I give and bequeath to Myra Smithson (generally called
Myra
Bennett) the sum of five thousand dollars to be held.......in trust.
Trustee
must give bond....as in case of guardian appointed by court".
Andrew Davis is
the executor and also became the trustee/guardian for Myra. Myra
lived with the
Davis family and is buried with them in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Myra also leaves a will in Williamson Co., TN, dated 29 Dec. 1928,
a codicil
made 7 Jan. 1929. Both were filed 14 Jan. 1929.
Her obituary mentions nieces and nephews who survive.

Comments:
Betsy thinks that Myra's mother (Mira) may have died in childbirth
of daughter
Mira but the 1860 census shows her as age 9, thus born in 1851/2,
not 1854. May
need to look more closely at the UDC application to determine if the
last
number is a 4 or 1. There was also a son, S. H. Smithson, who was
age 6 in the
1860 census of Bedford Co. also indicating his birth in 1854. This
would
indicate that Myra had a full brother as she claims in her UDC
application.
Need to read the 1870 census to find out where she is living.
Also 1880,
1900, 1910 and 1920.

John Pettus Smithson [Parents] was born on 14 Feb 1836 in , Williamson, Tennessee. He died on 14 May 1899 in , Hylton, Nolan, Texas. He married Mary Jane Hargrove on 9 Nov 1859 in , Williamson, Tennessee.

!Jno. P. Smithson is age 14 in 1850, age 24 in 1860 and John was age
44 in
1880. He was listed on the Falulkner Co. AR tax lists of 1880,
1881, 1882.

Comments:
Where did the 1878 death date for John come from? He was still
alive in the 1880 census as Janice La Fountain pointed out. He is
probably buried in Faulkner Co., AR. Also had his birth as 1836 and
Janice has 1837.
Could not find Hilton, TX but there is a Hylton in Nolan Co. TX.

Comments:
Her birthdate is given as 29 Jan. 1837 in another source. Bible
record was
used in the FLAT CREEK book and seems to be more accurate because 13
other
children were named, as well. It only said that she married a
Smithson, but
did not give his first name.
The cemetery book lists her birth year as 1831, which may be an
error in
copying.
