John Green Smithson became a Minister in the M. E. Church South.
He had migrated to Tennessee with his parents in 1827. Five of his sons
became lawyers.

Rev. John G. Smithson, a prominent farmer and stock-raiser, was
born in
1820 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and is the son of Hezekiah
and
Henrietta Smithson natives of Virginia. Our subject moved to
Jefferson
County Tenn., in 1827 with his father, but afterward to
Williamson County,
Tenn., and received his education in the common schools of that
county.
In 1841 he was married to Ann V. Ladd, the daughter of Noble
and Mary
Ladd, natives of North Carolina. To Mr. and Mrs. Smithson were
born
fifteen children: Noble H., Mary H., Anne, Martha J., Rebecca J.,
Fountain
D., John G., Paten C., Sarah E., Thornton L., William B., Isaac N.,
Alice D., Thomas F., and Henry C. In 1866 our subject purchased
350 acres
where he is now residing. It consists of excellent land, three
and a half
west of Pulaski, all well improved and a part in cultivation. He
has been
a local Methodist Episcopal minister in this county since 1854.
The Smithson family are all highly respected citizens, and the
early
members of the family were among the first settlers of Tennessee.
Mr.
Smithson owns a half-interest in the cotton and grist-mills known
as Vale
Mills, which are very famous all over the country. He is also a
stockholder in a turnpike and a Republican in politics."

Comments:
Ancestral File submission shows his birth year as 1829 and
Goodspeed's history says that he was born in 1820.
Maury Co. TN court case of Brown Vs. Irvine in 1858 has some
depositions
that indicate that the Smithsons were of Santa Fe, AL by 1856 where
they owned houses and property adjoining the Methodist Church.
Henry C., John G. (age 38) and William Smithson (age 36) were of
Lexington, Lauderdale Co., AL on 11 March
1859.
Looks like some of the notes got ripped out of the proper place.

Hezekiah Powell Smithson III [Parents] was born on 20 Mar 1847 in Santa Fe, Maury, Tennessee. He died on 29 Mar 1939 in Chinubee, Lawrence, Tennessee. He was buried in Mount Zion Cemetary, Knob Creek, Lawrence, Tennessee. He married Emily Jane Campbell on 7/17 Jan 1866 in , Lawrence, Tennessee.

Hezekiah P. Smithson was age 4 in 1850; H. P. was age 14 in 1860 and Hsekol[?] Smithson was age 23 in 1870. He was generally called "Huch" Smithson.
Hezekiah and Emily Jane Smithson lived on Indian Creek in Lewis
Co. TN after their marriage, probably to be near Emily's
grandparents, Hugh Allison and Emily Pillow McMackin. They then
lived at Henryville and after 1870 moved and settled at Chinubee,
Lawrence Co., TN. "Huch" farmed and had a blacksmith shop behind
their home, near the Methodist Church.
"Huch" and his brother-in-law, Matt White, enlisted in Confederate Gen.
Nathan Bedford Forrest's 9th TN Cavalry at Sawdust Valley, Maury Co.
TN in late Sept. or early Oct. of 1864. They were in Capt. George
Kinzer's Company, Col. Biffles Regt. This was about 30 to 60 days
before the skirmish at Columbia, preceeding the Battle at Franklin,
TN. They were at Corinth, MS about the time Gen. Lee surrendered.
Hezekiah Powell Smithson III, and 20 other soldiers were on forage
detail and were cut off from their command by a Regt. of Yankees.
They dodged about to avoid capture, during which the War ended. The
Foragers disbanded and returned to their homes in May 1865, without
returning to their command.

Emily Jane Campbell "Emma" was born on 18 Jan 1848 in Santa Fe, Maury, Tennessee. She died on 26 Jan 1926 in Chinubee, Lawrence, Tennessee. She was buried in Mount Zion Cemetary, Knob Creek, Lawrence, Tennessee. She married Hezekiah Powell Smithson III on 7/17 Jan 1866 in , Lawrence, Tennessee.

Comments:
Evidently Nannie J. is another name for Emily unless he married
Emily second.
"Nannie J. is age 22 in 1870"
Mildred filed a copy of the family group sheet with the National
Genealogical Society when she was a member in 1981.
Mildred has since indicated that there were no second marriages
and that she did not know who the Nannie J. might be. Since the
"Nannie J." probably came from a printed source, there is probably a
mis-reading of the wife's name. A re-check of the actual census
films is in order.
