"Winchester [IN] Journal" Wed., May 18, 1910. John E. Smithson, a well known and highly respected pioneer of Franklin township, died last Thursday morning after a six weeks illness with a complication of diseases. His wife, with whom he lived more than sixty years, died five weeks ago. He is survived by nine children, eight sons and one daughter, they being Jane, wife of Daniel Mendenhall, of Long Beach, California; Elvin, of Ridgeville; William, five and one-half miles Sourth-west of Ridgeville; Sater, Long Beach, California; Charles, one and one-half mile West of Ridgeville, Finley and Ira of Farmland, and Morris at home. Funeral services were held Sunday, his 80th birth anniversary, at Hopewell by Rev. Harvey Thornburg. Interment at nearby cemetery.
11. "Winchester [IN] Journal" Wed., May 25, 1910. Obituary John E., son of Geo. and Elizabeth Smithson, was born in Randolph County, near Windsor, May 15, 1830, departed this life, May 12, 1910, aged 79 years, 11 months and 27 days. At the time of his birth the country was practically a wilderness and the roads mud or corduroy, the settlers were few and far between, but Uncle John as he was known by a great many today, grew to young manhood under adverse conditions as far as acquiring an education was concerned, but he gathered by practical experience the material that lay the foundation for a good education and was chosen as teacher of the district school two or three times. He was married to Caroline Beck, March 14, 1850. To the union was born ten children, one girl and nine boys, one boy Geo. Michael having preceded him to the spirit land at the age of 38 years. This union was broken April 4, 1910, when the reaper death came and took the faithful wife and mother. It seems as though the Lord considered the wish of Uncle John and Aunt Caroline by taking them so near together, only being separated one month and 8 days, for their wish was to go together. He has lived in the present home on his beautiful farm for a period of 44 years but he has gone to live in his new home, the home of the soul forever. In young manhood he heard the voice of the Master calling him to repentance and yielding his heart to the call was converted and joined the Union Christian church South of Windsor, later moving away he called for a letter, received it but did not apply for church membership anywhere, but the Christian was the church of his choice. He lived a quiet Christian life at all times. He was a man of few words and believed in letting his daily life speak louder than his voice; he was strictly honest and everyone that ever had dealings with him felt the strength of his strong character. But his work is done, the hands have finished their toil and are folded to rest, but their works do follow them only to be finished in that glad country where they never say of the inhabitants, I am sick: for the former things have passed away and there shall be no more pain, neither sorrow, nor crying, for God shall wipe all tears from their eyes and shall lead them to fountains of living water and shall welcome them to the tree of life and its fruit forever. He leaves to mourn one sister, 8 sons, 1 daughter, 32 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren besides a large circle of friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held Sunday, his 80th birth anniversary at Hopewell by Rev: Harvey Thornburg.

Silas E Smithson [Parents] was born on 10 Jan 1855 in Ohio. He died on 3 Jan 1902 in Clinton, Ohio. He married Arwilda Brittenham on 27 Jun 1886 in Indiana.

I am trying to find more info on my Great Grandfather, Silas E.
Smithson. All the info my family knows is that he was born 1/10/1855 in
Ohio. He married Arwilda Brittenham about 1886 in Indiana(?). He died
about January 31, 1902, possibly in Spencerville, Ohio (Allen County).
All my father was told was that his grandpa went to Ohio on horseback to
visit his family, died there unexpectedly, and was buried there (but
they didn't know where he was buried; sounds sort of strange). Of
course, we haven't been able to trace this line back any further. (From Judith Schooley Foster)
