Was instrumental in building Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, IA. He managed the auditorium for more than 20 years before his retirement in 1974. A bronze plaque and the Warren Smithson Room commemorate his service.

Past auditorium
manager dies

Warren R. Smithson of Kiron, who managed Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines for 10 years, died Sunday of a heart ailment at the Denison Care Center in Denison. He was 75.

Smithson managed the auditorium from 1964 to 1974, when he retired and
moved to Kiron. He was hired as building superintendent in 1954, overseeing preliminary plans for the auditorium until its completion
in 1955. He became assistant manager in 1956.

Born in Des Moines, Smithson owned and operated the Euclid Avenue Dress Club, a dry cleaning business, until World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years, then returned to Des Moines and worked for the Veterans Housing Administration for two years.

He was a member of VFW Post 3626 in Des Moines and a past commander of Argonne American Legion Post.

Survivors include his wife, Elmarie; two daughters, Patricia Hancher of Evanston, Ill., and Donna Moreau of Des Moines; a sister, Myrna Ruten of Spalding, Saskatchewan, Canada; two brothers, Lyle of Des Moines and Dean of West Des Moines; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pfannebecker Funeral
Home in Denison. The body was cremated and burial will be at the Kiron
Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends from 11 a.m. until noon Wednesday at
the funeral home.

Elmarie was born on 12 Sep 1920. She died on 14 Jan 2000 in Kiron, Crawford, Iowa. She married Warren R Smithson.
