"George W. Smithson was born in Cornell** county, Virginia, on New Years day 1794 and died the 11th day of July, 1891, aged 97 years, 6 mo, and 10 days. He removed to Clinton county, Ohio, at the age of 19, and in 1825 he removed to this (Randolph) county, where he resided until his death. He was married in 1816 to Elizabeth daughter of Isaac and Rebecca Thornburg. This union was blessed with five children, one son and four daughters. His wife and two daughters preceded him to the spirit land. Perhaps no man was better known and respected in this county, being the oldest man in the county and he was a man of sterling worth. In 1835 he united with the church then known as the Christian Friends, now known as the Christian or Newlight church, and has been held a consistent member ever since. He leaves a host of relatives, his descendants being 5 children, 27 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren, besides a host of friends to mourn his death. After funeral services conducted by Rev. S.S. Hinshaw, he was laid to rest in New Dayton cemetery to await the smiles of the resurrection." (Publication & date unknown)

Comments:
See Probate packet #31 in Delaware Co., OH for Nov. Term 1839: George W. Smithson was appointed guardian for the children of Isaac Thornburg. What is the relationship ... uncle, son-in-law, brother-in-law?

There is an Isaac Thornburg marrying a Mary Ann Smithson, 30 March 1837, in Randolph Co., IN. Perhaps she was a widow of a SMITHSON, thus a second wife of Isaac Thornburg.

An obituary in the 1878 "Winchester Journal" calls him Wesley Smithson, which seems to be the name by which he was more commonly known.
A George W. Smithson is age 86 in the 1880 census and says that he, and both his parents, were born in VA. This would give him an approximate birth year of 1794. The only problem is that he must have arisen from the dead if he is the same as the Wesley Smithson who is listed in the obituary. Need to get a copy of the obituary.

Action: Need to read the 1870 Census of Randolph Co. IN. Need also to recheck the cemetery marker as well.

WIFE Elizabeth THORNBURG-198

Notes:
They were married on the 10th day of the 10th month (OS). Elizabeth was age 53 in 1850 and died before her husband.
Dates are given in Quaker format so day and month are not included.
[She died 4 day of 4th month in 1876]
Quaker records indicate that an Elizabeth Smithson was received on confession of faith by White River MM in Randolph Co., IN 8-1-1829.
On 5-14-1836 the Cabin Creek MM complained of Elizabeth Smithson "withdrawing from the Society and aiding in setting up and holding meetings contrary to discipline". On 8-13-1836 she was disowned.

10. "Winchester [IN] Journal" Wed., May 18, 1910. John E. Smithson, a well known and highly respected pioneer of Franklin township, died last Thursday morning after a six weeks illness with a complication of diseases. His wife, with whom he lived more than sixty years, died five weeks ago. He is survived by nine children, eight sons and one daughter, they being Jane, wife of Daniel Mendenhall, of Long Beach, California; Elvin, of Ridgeville; William, five and one-half miles Sourth-west of Ridgeville; Sater, Long Beach, California; Charles, one and one-half mile West of Ridgeville, Finley and Ira of Farmland, and Morris at home. Funeral services were held Sunday, his 80th birth anniversary, at Hopewell by Rev. Harvey Thornburg. Interment at nearby cemetery.
11. "Winchester [IN] Journal" Wed., May 25, 1910. Obituary John E., son of Geo. and Elizabeth Smithson, was born in Randolph County, near Windsor, May 15, 1830, departed this life, May 12, 1910, aged 79 years, 11 months and 27 days. At the time of his birth the country was practically a wilderness and the roads mud or corduroy, the settlers were few and far between, but Uncle John as he was known by a great many today, grew to young manhood under adverse conditions as far as acquiring an education was concerned, but he gathered by practical experience the material that lay the foundation for a good education and was chosen as teacher of the district school two or three times. He was married to Caroline Beck, March 14, 1850. To the union was born ten children, one girl and nine boys, one boy Geo. Michael having preceded him to the spirit land at the age of 38 years. This union was broken April 4, 1910, when the reaper death came and took the faithful wife and mother. It seems as though the Lord considered the wish of Uncle John and Aunt Caroline by taking them so near together, only being separated one month and 8 days, for their wish was to go together. He has lived in the present home on his beautiful farm for a period of 44 years but he has gone to live in his new home, the home of the soul forever. In young manhood he heard the voice of the Master calling him to repentance and yielding his heart to the call was converted and joined the Union Christian church South of Windsor, later moving away he called for a letter, received it but did not apply for church membership anywhere, but the Christian was the church of his choice. He lived a quiet Christian life at all times. He was a man of few words and believed in letting his daily life speak louder than his voice; he was strictly honest and everyone that ever had dealings with him felt the strength of his strong character. But his work is done, the hands have finished their toil and are folded to rest, but their works do follow them only to be finished in that glad country where they never say of the inhabitants, I am sick: for the former things have passed away and there shall be no more pain, neither sorrow, nor crying, for God shall wipe all tears from their eyes and shall lead them to fountains of living water and shall welcome them to the tree of life and its fruit forever. He leaves to mourn one sister, 8 sons, 1 daughter, 32 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren besides a large circle of friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held Sunday, his 80th birth anniversary at Hopewell by Rev: Harvey Thornburg.

Comments:
Is he in the 1910 Census of IN?

Action:
Need to read the 1870 Census of Randolph Co. IN. John Ellis Smithson was 80 years old when he died which projects a death date of about 1910. WPA death indexes for IN will give additional data. Perhaps an obituary can then be found. Randolph Co. IN cemetery lists need to be searched. Need to look at the CA death indexes to confirm a few of the death dates of the children who migrated West.
