Comments:
Evidently several of his children migrated to TN by the 1820's.
Did he go
with them? The Charles in Williamson Co., TN in 1830 is not old
enough to
be this Charles. This Charles is probably living with his children
in 1830 in
VA and we need to look further in census and tax lists.
Is he the Charles W. Smithson who is of Franklin Co., MO? See:
Correspondence from Susan D. Jones and Mecklenburg Smithson families.
Does Sterling T. Smithson (RIN: 6679) belong in this family?
Sterling's
marriage record names Charles T. Smithson as father who is giving
consent to
his son's marriage in 1830.

Comments:
The 1810 census indicates that Nathaniel Smithson and his wife were probably
the parents of at least 7 children before 1810. There were also 8 slaves who were part of the household.
Nathaniel may not have arrived in Williamson Co. until sometime before the 1830 census unless there is an error in the tick marks read by the transcriber of the census or an error in the transcription of the Smithson name.
Probably need to re-read from the film. If he did not come to Williamson county until
later, there is also the possibility that Stephen and his wife may have come at the same time. There is also the possibility that he came earlier and then returned to VA for a time.
The FLAT CREEK book says that Nathaniel N. Smithson married Polly Cheatham
and there is a marriage recorded for them in Lunenburg Co., VA in 1797.
He was age 77 in the 1850 census and two others (William J. Smithson, age 23 and a Polly Smithson, age 27) are also in the household. These could be his son William J. and his daughter Mary who married Conrad Hicks. Or "Polly" could be the wife of William J. William J. did marry a Mary Gibson but not until 1861 which is a late first marriage for him. In any case, William J. is born about 1817 in TN indicating his father's arrival before that year.
A probable daughter, Catherine K. is shown as being age 39 in 1850 (b. abt. 1811) in TN. This would indicate an even earlier arrival in TN.
There is a marriage in 1838 for a Nathaniel B. Smithson to a Sarah A. Smithson, daughter of David Smithson. Is this Nathaniel B. the same as the Nathaniel who married Polly Mary Cheatham? If so, Nathaniel B. married twice and there are children by two marriages, since J. Harrison Smithson
says that a Nathaniel and Sallie are his parents in the Confederate Questionnaire and J. Harrison Smithson was born about 1842. If not, then there are two Nathaniel B. Smithsons and the second Nathan Smithson, age 36 in 1850, with wife Sarah, age 22, and head of a household with several Smithson children including a James H. age 10, is probably the Nathaniel to which J. Harrison refers. The
second Nathaniel could be the son of the first but more evidence is needed.

Comments:
Need to send for will and probate file from Williamson Co., TN or
did Betsy
send it? Do need to check for some type of guardianship record for
minor
children, since both parents died fairly close together.
Deeds? Check indexes to see if they were granted any land and
what happened
to it after the death of the parents.
