John and Eliza obtained a certificate from Stuart MM to attend the Church of God in Morrisburg, IA.

There is a J. C. Smitleson listed as a farmer near Stuart in 1892 as listed in the Iowa Farmers Directory from that year. It is believed that the surname was misspelled and/or misread and that the person listed is actually John C. Smithson (TBH)

farmer who had undergone an operation about a week ago in which a leg was amputated.
Mr. Smithson, who had a circulatory ailment, was 86 years of age. Funeral services will be
held at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Bessmer Funeral Home. The Rev. C. Merritt LaGrone of
the Methodist church will officiate and burial will be in Stuart, Iowa, cemetery. The body lies
in state at the funeral home.

Mr. Smithson, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smithson, was born April 8, 1857 in
Randolph county, Indiana, and came to Iowa at the age of seven with his parents. The trip
was made by a group of four families, traveling by covered wagon. Mr. Smithson lived most
of the remainder of his life in Dallas and Guthrie counties. About 20 years ago he moved to
Afton, Iowa, and in February of this year came to Perry to make his home with Mrs. Mary Binns,
a daughter.

Mr. Smithson was married twice, his first wife being Eliza Viola Sprague, to whom he was wed
Aug. 14, 1880, at Linden. Some time following her death he was married on Sept. 5, 1925 to
Mrs. Ella Myers who has preceeded him in death.

Mr. Smithson was a member of the Methodist Church. Besides Mrs. Binns, Mr. Smithson is

Comments:
1860 census indicates that he was born in OH, not IN.
Roxie says he married his brother's widow Maria L. Cummins Smithson in 1909, yet the obituary says he married only twice and the second wife was Ella Myers who he married in 1925. If he married his brother's wife--they must have divorced since Maria lives to 1942 or so.

Marriage to Maria ended in divorce. (TBH)
