10. Obituary: (Hand written date of Sept. 6, 1918)
After an illness of many months, George W. Smithson passed away last
Friday. The funeral service were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the
Baptist Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Charles G. Wright. The
singing was by a quartet consisting of P. L. Stephenson, Alen Moffatt,
Miss Ethel Hickerston, and Miss Lucile Wright. The pall bearers were
members of the G. A. R. Post, of which the diceased was a member.
Mr. Smithson was born in Ohio November 4, 1844. He was married to
Eliza J. Frazier October 24, 1866. In early life they came to Iowa and
resided for a time at Leon, and late in 1881 came to Mount Ayr which has
been their home ever since. Eight children were born to them, two
daughters, the oldest and youngest having died years ago. Besides the
wife, who survives, are Frank Leslie of St. Joseph, Mo., Mrs. Orphie
Taylor of Centerville, Iowa, Mrs. Vinnie Trotter of Ellston, Iowa, and
Dallas, Bird and Techumseh of Mount Ayr.
During his active years Mr. Smithson was a contractor and builder and
as a mason assisted in the building of many of the structures around the
square of Mount Ayr. Upon the breaking out of the Civil war the deceased
responded to his country's call and rendered valiant service. In early
manhood he was converted and upon coming to this place became a member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Ayr and was for some years leader of its choir.

Comments:
The 1860 census indicates that he was born in OH, not IN.
Jean Donahue indicates that he was born in Clinton Co., OH. His certificate
for disability indicates that he was born in Randolph Co., IN.
The death date of 6 Sept. 1913 was sent by Roxie Haden but it does not agree
with the year given in the pension card index, cemetery or obituary date...year
of 1918 is probably correct.

Action:
Where is he in 1870 and 1910?
Need to send for service and pension papers.
Need to find the reference for when and where the obituary appeared in the
newspaper.

Eliza Jane Frazier was born on 19 Jun 1849 in Illinois. She died on 24 Jun 1927 in home daughter, Centerville, Appanoose, Iowa. She was buried in Rose Hill Cemetary, Mount Ayr, Ringgold, Iowa. She married George Wesley Smithson on 27 Oct 1866 in Redfield, Guthrie, Iowa.

Eliza J. Smithson was age 29 in 1880 and Eliza was age 50 in 1900.
She was a member of the Baptist church.
In the 1880 census Eliza indicates that her father was born in IN and her mother in VA.

past two and one-half years she has been helpless and dependent as
a result of a paralytic stroke. On Wednesday of last week Mrs. Taylor

time, but on Friday her heavenly Father called her to her eternal home.
The remains were taken to Mt. Ayr, the old home, where she will be laid
