Captain John Pettus Smithson [Parents] was born on 8 Aug 1808 in Lunenburg, Virginia. He died on 26 Mar 1855 in Marshall, Tennessee. He married Clarissa Wyatt Pettus on 6 Sep 1841 in Charlotte, Virginia.

Other marriages:

!Notes:
John P. Smithson was about 8 years old when his parents left
Virginia for
Tennessee in 1800. [?1816...is the year in error?]
In the Spring of 1836, the brothers Clement and John P. Smithson,
returned to
Virginia for a visit. While there Clement Jr. met and married Mary
Ann
Smithson and John married Clarrisa Pettus. They rode horse back
with their
brides to the 13th District in Williamson Co., TN.

Comments:
Is this the John Pettus Smithson who went to Texas?
A John P. Smithson was granted land in what is now Milam Co., TX
on 27 June
1835. The application records show that John P. was age 25 in 1834,
projecting
a birth of about 1808/1809.
John P. Smithson sold his claim on 28 July 1835 to Niles F. Smith.
Evidently John P. did not stay in Texas, since he appears on the
census of
Williamson Co., TN in 1850.
If Clarissa died in 1852, John would have had some responsibility
for minor
children. He did not live long afterward, was only age 47 at the
time he died.
What happened to the children? Were they placed out? Is there a
guardianship
for his children in Williamson Co. court records? Lunenburg Co., VA?

John P. Smithson does not seem to be in the 1850 Census of VA, yet
he is
marrying there in 1852. John P. may have returned from TN to VA
after his
first wife died--bringing the orphaned children back to live with
grandparents.

Book: "FLAT CREEK: ITS LAND AND ITS PEOPLE" c. 1986 Woodward & Stinson Printing Company, Columbia, Tennessee - page 96

Clarissa Wyatt Pettus was born on 14 Apr 1812 in Charlotte, Virginia. She died on 14 Mar 1852 in , Williamson, Tennessee. She married Captain John Pettus Smithson on 6 Sep 1841 in Charlotte, Virginia.

!Notes:
The TN Bible record gives Clarissa Wyatt's death date as 14 March,
1852 and
says that she was age 40 and wife of John P. Smithson. That places
her birth
in 1812. The VA Bible record says she was born 14 Apr. 1812,
daughter of
Overton Pettus who was usually called George.
Clarissa was shown as age 29 in the 1850 census, which is slightly
off unless
the age was misread.

In some records she is listed as Mary Ann but called Nancy. Not sure where the D. came from or what it refers to. Lucille Rizor has a photograph of her
tombstone and indicates that it is in the Andrew-Daniel Cemetery near Bethesda, TN. There is also a tombstone listed for her in the Giles (also called
Daniels) Cemetery.

The Veretts indicate that she died in 1865 as is indicated by the
probate dates, not as on the transcription of the tombstone, yet latest descendancy chart shows 1863 as her year of death. (April 23, 1863?)
