Crest on headstone - sketch by Terry (Smithson) Hildreth

The crest on the headstone has been determined to be that of a now defunct fraternal benefit society known as the "Brotherhood of American Yeomen" which was headquartered in Des Moines, IA. Most likely the BAY furnished the headstone as one of the death benefits. This would account for the crest and the words, "In Fond Remembrance" inscribed thereon. Comments:
Is this the John Pettus Smithson who went to Texas?
A John P. Smithson was granted land in what is now Milam Co., TX
on 27 June
1835. The application records show that John P. was age 25 in 1834,
projecting
a birth of about 1808/1809.
John P. Smithson sold his claim on 28 July 1835 to Niles F. Smith.
Evidently John P. did not stay in Texas, since he appears on the
census of
Williamson Co., TN in 1850.
If Clarissa died in 1852, John would have had some responsibility
for minor
children. He did not live long afterward, was only age 47 at the
time he died.
What happened to the children? Were they placed out? Is there a
guardianship
for his children in Williamson Co. court records? Lunenburg Co., VA?
