Peter Massey [Parents] was born in 1714. He died in 1773 in , Kent, Maryland. He married Notley Wright in 1736.

As to Judge Massey's work: The basic reason I trust
Judge Massey's work, generally, is that I have verified
so much of what he said through the wills themselves in
Annapolis (rather, abstracts of those wills). Josiah
Massey is named in the will of his father, Peter Massey,
who married Notley Wright. (Maryland Calendar of Wills,
1774-1777, p. 161.) He owned "Forest" and how Josiah got
it is interesting to our situation about James Maynard.
In Peter Massey's will written 25 Oct. 1773 and prob.
26 Oct. 1776, he left "Forest" to his son Wright Massey
and, should he die without issue, to son Lambert or
Enoch. But whoever got it had to pay son Josiah 120 lbs.
(English lbs.) But, as we saw, Josiah got "Forest"
somehow or other. Probably, whichever brother got it he
said you take the land and I keep the money. Of course,
it could have been decided by the executor with the
consent of the brothers (wife was exec.) Peter Massey
said in the will that he bought "Forrest" from John
Wright, probably father or bro. of wife Notley (I
haven't checked her lineage out). Notley is a famous MD
surname, and not unusual to turn up as her first name.
We visited the very old "Notley Hall" (run down) many
years ago in Southern MD.
Josiah's wife was Elizabeth Spry as Judge Massey
said, and I have traced this interesting family back
several generations. The ancient seat of the Spry
family was in Cornwall, England, although some later
generations lived in nearby Devon also. I have not
identified the immigrant ancestor in America as coming
from a particular Spry family in Cornwall or Devon but
that is the likely origin. May try to if I get time. As
my wife is President General, National Huguenot Society,
she had asked me to try to find a Huguenot ancestor
(Protestant French who fled religious persecution in
France.) I found a probable one through the Spry family
in the Eastern Shore named John Valliant. That is the
name of one in Norwich, England, but I haven't been able
to prove it is the same one. I also have one in the
Pullen line in VA but the proof is circumstantial and,
while convincing, is not strong enough for an
application paper. Besides, I am tired of joining
organizations...I prefer research.
